Dwellingup Pumpkin Festival 2015: A great day out for the family!

Our day here in Dwelligup town on Easter Saturday 2015 was a huge success – with 3000 people coming through our gates throughout the day. People travelled from all around the south-west (including suburbs of Perth, both north and south of the river; Fremantle, Rockingham, Mandurah and Busselton) to attend this unique and fun family day out. Everybody loved the relaxed, welcoming country atmosphere of our little town.

Our Aboriginal Dance Crew ‘Warrdong’ helped make our day extra special with a ‘traditional land owners welcome’ and a magnificent display of Aboriginal dance and didgeridoo. People were also making the most of the beautiful day out and enjoying the sights of Dwellingup – including the Art Gallery and Treetop Walk at the Forest Heritage Centre, a train ride on the Hotham Valley Railways, a coffee at the fabulous Blue Wren Café, or popping into to Newbliss Winery or The Wine Tree on the way home…

And the winner of the Giant Pumpkin Competition this year was Loui Della Pollina from Jarrahdale who grew the winning pumpkin that weighed in at 187.5kg!

A good number of giant pumpkins were on display, as well as oversized watermelons, zucchini’s, butternuts, sweet potatoes, beetroots and sunflowers. It was a colourful display which caught a lot of people’s interest. Giant pumpkins were cut open to show visitors the inside of these unique giants; hundreds of giant pumpkin seeds were given away to budding green thumbs keen to ‘give it a go’ for next year. (With $1000 cash prize on offer for the winning pumpkin in 2015 and, of course, the prestige that goes with the title… why wouldn’t they!)

Winning giant pumpkin seeds can be posted out to interested growers within WA – to be planted in the first week of November (Melbourne Cup Day is the day to plant!) to be ready in time for next year’s event. Please contact Dwellingup Primary School to organise your giant seeds for next year's competition!

Please keep an eye out for us next year festival: Easter Saturday, 26th March 2016. This have to be a must in your diary!
